Sydney Wooden Boat School
I ran classes under the banner of the Sydney Wooden Boat School from 1989, first at River Quays Marina with the encouragement and financial backing of Marina owner John Wood and then at the old Mortlake Post Office and rear workshop. Evening and weekend classes and a Summer School were held, open to anyone who wanted to learn boatbuilding. Different wooden boatbuilding methods each had their dedicated class: WEST System Strip Planking, Traditional Clinker Planking, Plywood Clinker Planking and Build Your Own Stitch and Glue dinghy were the most popular. Real estate pressure saw us move in 1996 to Blackwattle Studios in Glebe and cut back to just the Summer School, I worked with at-risk youth from 1995, and ran Work-for-the-dole projects for several years building two yachts for Sailability and two lifeboats for the square rigged James Craig among other projects.
A series of boatbuilding manuals grew out of my experiences teaching first-timers and have now been combined in a single volume Wooden Boatbuilding- The Sydney Wooden Boat School Manuals see HOME Page or sydneywoodenboatschool.com.au/shop
Just a few of the more than fifty boats produced at the School between 1989 and 2001 are pictured below.
